Conveyancing News: Home Information Pack survey reveals confusion

Article Published: 01-May-2007

In a survey conducted by propertyfinder.com, it was revealed that whilst most buyers and sellers had heard of HIPs, just over a quarter actually knew what the acronym meant.

And does it really matter if do not actually know what the abbreviation stands for as long as we understand what the product is for? However, the survey found there was general confusion over what will be in a HIP.

Most people were correct in their knowledge of an energy performance certificate, but a staggering amount of buyers, less than half, expected evidence of title or a search, the two key legal documents in the pack.

Warren Bright, chief executive of propertyfinder.com said: "The level of ignorance in the general public is astonishing given the publicity HIPs have had over the last year, but at least most buyers and sellers have heard of them, even though they have little clue of what will actually be in the pack."
